Safer Social Networking Principles for the EU

On 10 February 2009, leading web firms signed for the first time a European agreement to improve the safety of minors who use social networking sites. The Safer Social Networking Principles for the EU have been developed by providers in consultation with the European Commission as part of its Safer Internet Plus Programme, and a number of NGOs, to provide good practice recommendations for the providers of social networking and other user interactive sites, to enhance the safety of minors using their services.

EDiMA welcomes this self-regulatory initiative which has been developed in cooperation with stakeholders from government, civil society, and industry. EDiMA supports such dialogues and cooperative initiatives, but notes that only some member companies have signed these Safer Social Networking Principles. The principles are intended for social networking providers only. Accordingly, EDiMA is not itself a signatory.
